This is something I had never done before. and it got me my first Monarch conquest win.In fact, I had little choice, as my Chinese empire lagged in size and power from even early in the game. The game was a standard map, two continents with four civs each: Russia, China, Egypt and Greece on one and Babylon, India, France and Persia on the other. Russia was the early leader on my continent, and although China was next in size, it was lacking in key resources. First no iron, then later no saltpeter or oil; that AI knowledge of all resources hurt in this one. Cleo and Alex, although relatively small, were able to grab everything available. Some nifty trading corrected the early problems, and some quick city grabs from both fixed the problem permanently. Then sit back, maximize production and wait until we gain the tech advantage. Meanwhile, India goes up in smoke without ever finding the other continent.Mao's surging scientific civ gets to Navigation second, but for some reason Catherine has not sent out any explorers. A stroke of luck there; Babylon is only two Galley turns away from China's only eastern port. Mao finds Hammy, X-man and Joan first. They're way behind in tech, of course, but we get the rep boost and the money from all the diplo trading. Joan is down to about five cities, and Babylon and Persia have apparently been at war more or less forever. Mao gets chummy with Alex and trades for oil, and then makes a run for MT and tanks. China gets there first, and also to Flight. A massive air fleet and ground army makes short work of Egypt and Greece after that. Persia knocks out a few more French cities, and China takes the last one for an outpost on that continent. At the same time, Babylon is falling to the increasingly mighty Persians, leaving huge stretches of unclaimed land. Russia gets to them first. We lose our French outpost to Persia, who came in briefly and relatively ineffectively with the Greeks. And then there were three.Hmmm, air and ground superiority have been achieved; we also need sea advantage. I begin to build the biggest navy I have ever assembled, and for the first time build subs. Lots of them, and nuclear ones. We start to build a few tactical nukes; and then we get the Cure for Cancer and finally spring a Golden Age. We get Satellites and ICBMs halfway through the GA, and by the time it's over we have enough nukes to blast every city on the map with a good few left over. We're gonna need that cancer cure. Heh heh.All is peaceful, and we have an RoP with Cathy. We station armed subs all around her territory, and MAs in it, just outside the blast radius of every city. We have a good few waiting around Persia too. The Persian inland cities will be hit with ICBMs.So - Cathy first. We declare war and hit every single city with a nuke. The pollution warning goes bright red. There's a surprise. Removing Russia from the map takes a total of three turns. She does manage to hit three of my cities with nukes though, but at this point, the fat lady is already warming up (but so is everybody on the planet). Just as we wipe out Russia, Persia declares war. Dumb move. A good thing we stationed those subs ahead of time. But the X-man has virtually no fleet. His early attack wipes out all my MAs that have gone through Russian cities on his continent, though, so we need to get more ground units in quickly. We proceed as with Russia - every Persian city gets nuked. And a few of them several times. By the time the third transport-load of MAs hits the continent, Persia has no spare units for attack purposes. And with no fleet to speak of, he can't use the three tactical nukes he's built.By 1995, Mao is alone on the globe, but he's made a desert of it in the process.

Bring it Sid!!!

Alternative thread title = My last Civ3 game.
I've known for quite a bit now that theres only a couple cases where an attempt with the Sid skill level would actually be possible and I've come to the conclusion that the Viking Republic is the only strategy that will work. The forced isolation and the AI's stupidity in naval warfare would be the only way to play at this skill level.

I originally started this game as an Emporer level game, but by 400 BC I had already found it too easy. So I used the play last world option and gave a try at the Sid level, more as a joke to be honest. So I did have some pre-knowledge of the map and where to send my early scouts... So instead of making and losing 10 curraghs, I got by on 3 and saved myself a good 105 shields worth of scouts.

The save files I have here:

Addited: conquests v1.22

4000 Autosave... First save possible. I built did move my settler to a diff tile to start as well.

The Golden Age - My golden age in the war vs the hittites. The invasion of the Hittites land is still a few turns away from that file... And thats a pretty fun invasion to play. I think at one point I have 15-20 elite bezerks going at a stack of over 50 swordsmen, and that results in atleast 3 or 4 great leaders (which are turned into three or 4 armies ;) ) Little addit here... If you want to see how to use forests and get the most from your tiles in the middle ages, this is a great file to look at... My production here is really tough to match. I've got forests all over the place (came with engineering) and am really maxxing the production on every city.

The Invasion of the Chinese - This was an interesting invasion. Oh... The Japanese declared war on me prior to that and I managed to use the armies from the Hittites invasion to capture quite a few Japanese island cities and pretty much forced them back to their main isle before that. The Chinese during this save are involved in a major war vs the Ottomans (I allied and brought in the Ottomans) and the Chinese are pretty easily running over the Ottomans. Your transports are coming up on the back side of China and he has little defence there... It's all up on the frontline fighting the Ottoman. The Chinese fall for me in a very little amount of time. If you're loading the saves... There are 2 invasion forces that hit the Chinese mainland. One are the southern armies that have just finished cleaning up the Japanese islands and the other is reenforcements from my mainland that are going to hit the Chinese // Ottoman frontline. The armies pretty much finish the Chinese off before the reenforcements arrive anyway.

The Fall of the Chinese - I had to save this as I've done it a couple times (did it to the Germans and Hittites as well)... The frontline units for China are still wandering around and there are quite a few chinese units left on the map... But I've now taken every one of their cities. For some reason though, they aren't eliminated. If you look through the chinese stacks, you will find a musketman defending a lone settler. Theres a musketman army of mine able to reach them, so the final battle vs the chinese is my 15 health musket army taking out a 4 health musketmen unit (and capturing the settlers). After killing that settler, the remaining chinese units are removed from the board (If I remember right, the Chinese units that are removed from the board are actually pretty close to the same power level I'm at).

The Fall of the Germans - Exact same thing as the Chinese... Theres alot of German units still on the board as I capture their last city. All the German units are removed without a fight when I captured their last city.

After that file came the tech race. I managed to get to electronics pretty quickly and have a few techs the Indians and Japanese lack. When I finally get espionage I planted some spies... My next post will have the military screen shots... This is something you have to see to beleive.

TEThurkan story

I started this on another thread, so I figured I might as well put it here too.Oh, by the way, I'm poking fun at some of the more absurd things about civ. See if you can spot them. :pChapter One -- The Beginning The group of cities clustered to the north of the continent had been conscious of each other for some time. They all spoke the same language and dressed in the same clothes. They ate the same foods, and hunted in the same forest. So it was in the first year of the German nation, when Otto von Bismarck joined the people in an unbreakable alliance, and created Greater Germany as one would light a torch to light the way for the other nations of the land, which they named Europa. By and by, the Germans found other tribes also inhabiting Europa. There were the French to the southwest; the Celts to the south; the Poles to the east; the Hungarians to the southeast; the Vikings to the north; and across a very narrow bit of sea lived the English. At first Bismarck desired good relations with all his neighbors; there was no point in picking a quarrel with any of them. But then one day a German sooth-sayer made a discovery that would bode ill to many of the inhabitants of Europa... "Von Bismarck, look at this!" * Hands over a lump of metal "What is it?" "I call it iron, sir." "And you show me this because...?" "Sir, I've already tested it and found it much harder than bronze. Just think of what we could do! Harder tools, better knives...." The sooth-sayer blabbered on, but Bismarck was already thinking furiously. "Where did you find this?" He cut across his underling's drivelling. "In my backyard, sir." "How much more do you have?" "Aside from this? Not much. I had to use some for testing, and I had to gift some to the blacksmith for his services... Is that a problem?" "HOW ARE WE TO GET BY WITH ONLY THIS LITTLE BIT?!" Bismarck thundered. Comepletly cowed, the wise man stuttered: "I... Well.... ummm..... I've noticed that the French seem to have some near Luxembourg..." Bismarck angrily dismissed his subject. He sat thinking for a long while. Could he do without this new material? No, those French had never been too friendly... When it came down to it, either he would have to attack to get the iron, or the french would attack using iron weapons. He made his decision, hard as it was: he would have to lead his peaceful people to war. "Call out the huntsmen!" He yelled to his guards. He sent them to the southern limits of German lands, near to Luxembourg as he could get them without provoking the population of the town. There they waited for reinforcements. The war was just around the corner, and everyone could feel it. The arid land was hard, hot in summer and cold in winter. The water was sweet and had many fish and the people could grow pumpkins, corn and squash. The mountains had game and the people had meat. Here Luzon built the First Wickiup and the people stayed.Nearby were a people who called themselves Navajo and they created a home they called Rivers Bend. For 250 years the like hearted people prospered sending scouting bands of warriors north and south. The people sent out more young men to scout our lands. A people called Cherokee were found to have bad hearts. Our young men forced them to leave our lands, and in the south red dyes are found. In the year 3250 First Wickiup grew crowded and many of the people moved away to form their own home, which they called Red Dyes. And once again the young men had to chase away the Cherokee. 50 years later some people from Rivers Bend moved away to live near the Yellow Metal found in the nearby mountains. It was the Chief Washington that made the bold desicion to miggrate the tribe south, away from the great lake, a nearby mountain which came to be the home of the spirits and later the gods.hundreds of the American tribe migrated to the foots of the mountain. But then a problem arised, further south there were dense jungles, full of dangerous animals and deadly deases!North was the Great Lake, but they can't go back! the fish population won't take another fishing wave!Washingtone's soloution was both ingenius and revoloutanery- they will construct a temporery large camp, with each "division" of the tribe work the land responsebly outside the city limits. The the phitest and most skilled people were called to biggin construction of roads, to increase trade and ease the farmer's works. The new town was called Washington after the Great Chief himself! Years pased, and even though the fish population, as claimed by scouts, was prospering, no body made the first step... More Years passed and a new leader arised, called Yarks, this man decided that the village was over populated and created a miggration party: men, women, children, livestock and seeds begane a long journey down another lake, called the Lake of Grass, for the large Grasslands that surrounded him. the miggrents traveled for years aound the Northen shore of the Lake of Grass, and finall came to form another village, called New York. The name derives origenelly from Yarks, but over the years the settlers changed it to York, without noticing. At the same time people were beggening to understand that the worled is controled by spirits, one of the greates was Yark, or York, and the village itself belived to be a spirit was named New Yark- showing peoples wish for their town to be as great as Yark.More immegrents were sent from Washington to form new villeges north in both sides of the Great Lake.Philadelphia was constructed on the coast of the salt watered "Neverending Blue" next the villege of Boston was made on the river "Elk" (the name derives from the leader's totam at the time the river was found). The river Elk was discovered to be a huge spirit sending waves on shures every begging of the spring making the ground amazingly furtile. All villeges grew and in time even more settelments came to exist, these included Atlanta, which was built in a brave discion inside the jungles South of New York,Houston- made up river of the river Elk, Seattle which came even norther to Houston, and a few more towns with the northest one being buffaloon the border wih the Azteck tribe. The Azteck tribe, from the point of the Americans were a bunch of barberians whose entire purpose in life was to rape and pillage, you can excepect the Aztecks atttude to be quite simmiler. Even though the two tribes were hostile to each other they still traded ideas, the americans, known for their great construction (Note: i do not mean wanders) traded their knowlage of architacture for the Aztecks knowlage of fire andd meltable rocks. meanwhile in the city of Houston an amazing discovery was being made! people there devolped a way to use the early symbols that were used by the governers to keep recors could be used for other things- this awesome idea quickly spread and was called "writing", elders in all towns sank into the stadies of art and their efforts gave fruit in a few genortions in the form of litrature!. As the Elders studied the arts of wrighting the younge and simple built, dug and farmed. roads began connecting villages that were now growing to awsome sizes, or cities- from the word "sit" great villages were old people sit... (ahh... the ignorence of peasents... ;) ) and farmlands were being made better by an old technique that was passed on from genoration to genoration. even mines were bein constructed. In the cities grand temples were constructed to honore the sprits. However a new move began, a move that prometed the idea of elimanting the Aztecks. these people constripted people for war. the new discovery of iron would prove invanurable when the time for war came.and withen a few years that war came when the people of Buffalo were threatend and bolied until they swore aligence to the Aztecks (what other reason to do this unforgivable act would they have.-----------------------------------1st chapter, called- the begging, from "the History of America" writen in the unverstie and Great Liberie in Washington for president Sherman in the great capitol of Houston 1350 AD"Ok this is you might have noticed is only the begging. i would like to get your feedbacks before delving into the secod chapter (who will be called "The Siege on Atlanta and Documaent of Death,(doesn't that sould like a HP book?))

Nice Little Surprise from the Vikings

Greetings all, just started playing Conquests again after playing other games and my XBox for about a year. So, of course I've been up to around 2 a.m. the last three nights. But true to it's nature Civ always manages to suprise me. I started a Regent level game figuring that's where I left off before and was still getting my a$$ handed to me in Monarch games. So I'm cruising along with my Japanese civ, I have the Ottoman's to my north and the Vikes to my west. Rome to the extreme north and the Persians were to my south but they had to go before they found their immortals. Very easy war since most of the Persian civ was in Tundra and very small and backward.Well I just started building my Samurai and had an army made up of MI, Samurai and a few stacks of Pikemen and Trebuchet for good measure. I make the Ottoman's mad and start my war, early intelligence showed that the best unit they had was the longbowman and the first three cities I was scouting had two pikeman a piece guarding it.My mistake was not checking out the Vikings to my west.So I march into Ottoman territory and take the first city in the first round. Between that round and the next I hear that the Vikings and Ottoman's have signed a treaty against me. I quickly move my MI and some pikeman and new Musketmen over to that border to slow the Vikings (Which on last check still had only MI). Well, I completely forgot they had built not only The Temple of Zues but also the Crusades.Bam, attacking my stacks of 12 MI and 15 Pikes and Muskets were about 20 Ancient Cavs and 25 Crusaders. So, after that little war I had two Ottoman cities, a decimated western border in which I lost three cities and a huge chunk of my army.I'm now building up some Cav's and infrastructure.Love this game...

Conquests of the Viking nation

Edit:Specs: Vikings, emperor, huge map, archipelago, small landmass, random everything else. Ships sailed across the oceans in search of new lands, colonies were been founded in all four corners of the world and strange goods were traded from even stranger peoples. Great structures, wonders of the world, had been constructed and Trondheim was undoubtedly the greatest city mankind had seen. But the years were not all laughter and sunshine, conflict was always a part of the Viking way of life, with warlords fighting each other for dominance over the most fertile lands and the richest resources. All that ended when a new figure stepped into play. Algot Blodnäbb did what no one before had achieved. He united the people and convinced all warlords to swear fealty to him. Now was the time to seek blood, wealth and glory beyond the seas, to see if anyone could stand against the might of this new Viking nation.

A Day in the Life of an Iroquois...

…Clan Chief (3500):My name is Shononses, Chief of the Heron Clan of the Oneida, the People of the Great River. For many generations, my people have migrated across the earth, with only vague memories of the lands we traversed. Now, with our friends the Onondaga, Seneca, Mohawk, Cayuga, and Tuscaroa, we have learned to work the land and harness the creations of life so that they yield back grain and fruit to support a sedentary settlement. We have built up our new home bound by life and blood to the Great River, created and protected by the Life Spirit. We have great land for our wheat, wild cattle that we have herded, and abundant wild game to hunt in the forest nearby. I attended one of the first meetings of the Great Council who rule over our noble Confederation. As a clan chief in the Oneida tribe, I convinced the elders that our people needed protection from the Teohuacan, an old enemy that we have often contested with over hunting lands. Now, they were threatening and harassing our new settlement, even raiding our homes one night, making off with many slaves. A war party, the Wolverines, were sent to end the threat. They were completely successful, killing all of the men and making slaves of the women and children. These fierce and brave warriors then were sent to scout out the new lands and send back information about the world the Life Spirit had led us to.Game Notes:C3C v. 1.22, Regent, Large Map, Continents, 60% Water, Normal Temp/Percip, 5 Billion Years, Normal AI Agression, Roaming Barbarians, 11 Random AI, All Victory Conditions, No Respawning.

First Emperor Win

OK - I haven't posted here in ages, but I had to come in tonight to brag on myself. After months of trying, I finally got a win at Emperor (still playing vanilla 1.29) at 5 minutes to midnight on Christmas Eve. Nice little Christmas present to myself.

As Emperor games go, it was remarkably nonviolent, especially considering that I was playing as Xerxes. However, I got a phenomenal start. My capital was located at the apex of an A shape without the crossbar in extremely fertile territory. I was also fairly distant from my neighbors - India and Rome, and more remotely, France and Iroquois. This allowed me to expand quickly in two directions at once and fill out a substantial area largely unchallenged.

My first conflict came when India dumped a city in the open gap between four of mine. Hmm, must be something very tempting sitting there. So I attacked and destroyed it. Hiawatha immediately put another city there; what the heck are they trying to grab? Another quick skirmish to get rid of that city too, then I settle down for a while. I grab a couple of Indian cities at both ends of my A, and that's my last conflict for a looong time. By this time we have entered the Middle Ages and I am in the tech lead for once. I also have Sun Tzu and have a strong military. I get to Navigation first and discover Greece, Egypt and a very backward Babylon. Greece is a tad ahead of me on points, but I still am developing faster than anyone except Rome, and I take care to follow a different track than Caesar to make sure I can trade back and forth.

I get dragged into a worldwide attack on Greece by way of MPPs, but I never fire a single shot, remaining perfectly happy to let Egypt wipe Alex off the map while I get my second wonder - ToE - and consolidate my tech lead. I'm tops in productivity now and am first to Motorized Transportation and start loading up on tanks. Not that I intend to use them; I'm working on a diplomatic victory at this point, figuring a 4-3 vote in my favor (Cleo, Gandhi and Hiawatha voting for Cleo). Halfway to the UN, Hiawatha decides to attack; Rome and France declare war on my side. I take two cities from him; I lose one back to a culture flip almost immediately and then Joan grabs it from under my nose. My cities start rioting from war weariness; I decide to offer peace to Hiawatha; he takes it. Risky move - Rome is now annoyed at me. I butter Caesar up a bit by handing him the second Iroquois city. Then, just to be sure, one turn short of the UN I redeclare war on Hiawatha. The result - I win the vote against Cleo 4-1 with Gandhi and Hiawatha abstaining. I score 3657 (a personal best) and finish in 1794AD.

Now to save up for Civ4...

Merry Christmas, all!

P.S. to LC - GO BEARS!!!

Mursilis Beats 'Em Up

Emperor Mursilis had come out to take a look at the recently-captured city of Wonsan.

"No harbor," he snorted. "Whose idea was that?"

An aide shrugged. "No telling what the Koreans were thinking. There is a nice natural bay here, though."

Mursilis strode down toward the beach, gazing up at the huge statue standing over the left side of the city. "Nice workmanship...a bit on the decrepit side, though." Looking to his right, he studied the ancient lighthouse tower. "Not bad, considering the time period...can't say it's much use to modern ships." Coming to the beached ship which had been preserved as a monument, he halted. "Round the world, eh? From here? What'd he do, circle the polar cap?"

"I believe the course slants around to the south," a different aide stated carefully--the Emperor had been known to treat underlings who contradicted him harshly. "At least, that is what the maps show."

"Hmph." Mursilis turned and meandered back into the city. "These are the last, then?"

"That's correct," the second aide replied. "In all the world, there are no longer any great works of wonder save the ones we possess. And as matters stand, I seriously doubt anyone will be able to surpass us. Only the Koreans are even close, and their conquest now seems assured."

A fierce grin split the Emperor's face. "I trust the dam's construction proceeds apace."

"All is well, my Emperor. And the fission research as well."

Mursilis raised a brow. Nuclear fission was a state secret. "Good," he mused, making a vague gesture to the nearest general. "Then all is well, and soon all the loose ends will be tied."

"Soon...?" the aide started. The crack of a pistol shot finished for him.

The War with Maya

The following is a transcript of the War with the Mayan Scum (still ongoing), as reported to the citizens of the 1BC Democracy Game at Civilized. The save may be downloaded in this thread, for all those interested. A paper copy of the turnchat notes may also be downloaded there. If this peaks your interest or you want to be involved, feel free to sign up and become a citizen. No participation is too small.
We are currently in the Middle Ages, working on Military Tradition and Cossacks, as we are playing as Russia. Much of this might seem a bit odd to you, download the save to give you a reference to the city names. I would much rather have the Mayans hostile to them when he does.”

We declare war on Maya

In negotiations, the Field Marshal said, “tell them to get their sorry smelly deadbeats off our land” before checking to see if they actually were on our land. He then decided to just renegotiate peace after learning there were some undefended workers in our territory
We offer peace in exchange for Bonampak and a territory map. They decline.
Also sign military alliance versus Mayan with Aztec for democracy and them paying the shipping charges and a
Sir Bis volunteered next, and also failed
Sir rish, coming out of nowhere, scored the first victory in Bonampak
Sir port, also succeeded and was promoted to elite
Sir von succeeded against a wounded spearman
We told Sir immortal that the longbowman in Bonampak was actually a Persian immortal, and he captured the

Incan musketmen have crossed the border into our lands 1 NW of Glaazport

Signed another military alliance against the maya, this time giving them a near New York
Footballia produces knight named Samson, starts musketman
Community Army knight Gallant Fox defeats a Mayan longbowman who helped kick the Incan muskets’ asses
Push towards Palenque begins by crossing into their fabled gold mines

Lancealittle was eager to go and went with them, per his Governor’s orders

Bonampak is now out of resistance, production changed to library and rushed for 120 gold (taking some liberties here because of the war)
0.10.10, +80 gpt, 1784 gold, Theory of Gravity in 2, Smith’s in 7, Magellan’s (will be Newton’s later) in 8

1050 AD

Mayan counter-attack on the need one for military police)
Magadan gave knighthood to Engelier
Chinese are building Magellan’s, Indians Shakespeare’s
I guess it was a good choice to bribe the Incans, they just showed up with 6 more archers, a longbowman, and 4 medieval infantry…our Spirit Dancers and Sevastapol’s Finest just waved

I’m not provoking them by asking them to leave, either

Attack force reaches hills on the outskirts of Palenque

1060 AD

Ha! The Maya have requested an audience...I accept out of a morbid curiosity

Even trade for a peace treaty? Nope, see ya.

Mayan counter-attack

Again, none. Wussies.
They’re building Shakespeare’s though (why?)

We discover Theory of Gravity! Production will be changed in Sevastapol to Newton’s University

Science set to…well, what? I choose military tradition over magnetism, discovery in 8

St. Petersburg trains the knight Omaha, production switched to university in anticipation of future Cossack training
Grishnakia builds a courthouse, starts attempting to bolster its pathetic military by producing medieval infantry
The Russian Aussies feel the lose of Sir Bluice and provide the Templar Order with another crusader, Lady skulldent
The assault on Palenque

Our batteries’ bombardments were both successful, revealing that they’re only 2 spearman in the city, but perhaps other units
Sir Portugal leads the charge, and was hit by a trebuchet (wow) before succumbing to spear wounds
Sir Locus, seeing his companion fallen and main source of entertainment gone, rushes into battle and his fury destroys the offending spearman. But his soul will never be the same.
Sir jb wandered onto the field and captured the city and the trebuchet somehow

The Bashniyan knight Engelier also defeats a longbowman near Bonampak
Deepwater ports now available in Civ3

Have you checked out the new Age of Piracy modpack for Conquests? If your coastal city does not have a deepwater port, small ships can enter but not big ships. Some play that you can invade, others no. I was not invading). However, I did make it the easiest difficulty, on the smallest map, with Accelerated Production, no barbarians, and anything else which would make my game easier. Not really a challance...pretty much, I was just really bored...Anyway, the point of the story is that after a while, my city got pretty damn strong. By 1908, I had 39,067 culture, coming in at 163/turn. I was producing 156 shields/turn. However, and perhaps the most impressive, with the science slider at 100%, I was putting in 808 gold into research from that city alone! If you look at the city the gold pours right out of the screen! This is because I grabbed every single Great Wonder that doubles your scientific production.I posted the save below if anyone wants to look for themselves. You may see that I have a second city - well I had obviously already won that game, far surpassing the 20,000 culture needed to do so. So, I decided to fool around a little bit.Oh, and I knew that things doubled in culture every 1,000 years, but I didn't know that that doubling was limited to once. At least that's the way it was in this game. Can anybody verify that?

So I finally find my C3C disc...

...and after several months of not playing, I decide not to bother trying to resist temptation, as we all know it's no good even trying.Evenafter all this time, the "Play Last World" option was there. Nah, I'll start a new one.70% Continents, sure, why not, not going to change anything. Level: Monarch. Well... figure might as well get right back into it. Tribe: had been set to Random, alright, works for me.I draw the Bab's. Woohoo! Who's on my land? Greece, Germany, and Russia. 3 OTHER Scientific Civs. There goes that advantage.Russia gets ganged up on and out they go. I'm behind several techs, at least 6, and I decideto go for Lit, and pop a SGL! It's good to be back. Rush Artemis and start pushing my borders. It's a building phase of the game, relative peace and calm.Fast forward to 1260 AD: My caravel finally makes it across the oceans. Who do I meet first? Shaka. They're looking for Mysticism, Code of Laws and the like. Lovely. They DO have communications with the Dutch, and from there everyone meets everyone else and from being a tech or three behind, I'm even after trading, and Greece, the Dutch and I hit the Industrial Era even. By now, Germany is down to Berlin after numerous long wars with Greece. Getting Templar, Magellans and a few other WoW's, at least in my opinion, warrants a sneak attack to prevent them from falling into the hands of the Greeks.Another time of peace, with minor wars on my part against Egypt and Rome.I get Flight and yet another SGL!. I decide to save him.Going into the Modern Times, it's me, Greece and the Dutch, all basically even. I trade Tankies to Alexander and he gets Fission, which I trade him Rocketry and Computers for. Here comes the UN. Start buttering up Zulu's (in the early Middle Ages), and the Vikes and Egypt (both in the mid Industrial Ages).Build the UN and poof... there it is, a win first game back. Not huge, but a good win nonetheless. Took just four nights, too.During the game I lost a mere three cities to war, all of which Shaka's rampaging forces recouped at later stages of the game, and a few more to culture flips. I eliminated five civs - no one else knocked anyone out - leaving a much weakened Greece and a belligerent but backward India at the end of the game. I also never entered Communism during this game.First on the chopping block were the English, who had the misfortune to be sandwiched between the very well-positioned Zulu - who controlled almost a third of a continent containing five civs right from the get go (popping an early settler for the third time in four games didn't hurt either) - and the Romans. With no resources and no means of escape, it was sayonara Lizzie. Also on the continent were Greece and the Iroquois. Hiawatha was stuck on the bottom end of a peninsula largely controlled by Alex, who was as ever the culture king. The other three civs, once I found them, were India, Babylon and Persia. The usually mighty Xerxes had been stuck on a small island by himself with a mere six cities, and had no contact with anyone when I got to him. Gandhi and Hammy were duking it out over a fairly sizeable continent with a chain of islands.Meet everyone, set up embassies everywhere and get RoPs with everyone. Sit around for a while building forces. Hmmm, Persia's close enough to reach in one turn even without Magellan's, so as soon as your RoP is up, you're out, X-man. No sweat. At the same time, let's get sneaky with Babylon. I get to tanks way ahead of everyone else, and use my RoP to post a transport load of tanks and a few mech infantry outside every city in Hammy's empire. RoP expires; the same turn so does Babylon. An entire civ in one turn - never done that before. heck, never even thought of that before.Caesar is getting pesky - he controls the isthmus to get to Greece and Iroquois. His RoP is up, and he doesn't have any serious hardware yet, so bye bye Julius. Antium sits at the gateway to Greece - we start loading it up with a massive air and ground force. By now we're churning out as many as ten MIs and tanks a turn. Nice. And we have Universal Suffrage. Quick wars mean we can stay in Democracy with little to worry about.OK, Greece is getting a little on the big side, but they have no coal. We don't to hit them just yet, but getting through Greece to Iroquois will be slow without rails. Let them wear themselves out in a silly intercontinental war with India for a couple of hundred years. Time for some more RoP abuse with Hiawatha. Dump a few transports full of MAs across the channel into Iroquois territory. They have no oil. Ah, what a shame. I'm fed up waiting for RoPs to lapse; I'm the big guy and I'll do what I want. Sign an MPP with Alex, declare war. Hiawatha stupidly lets a battleship stray into my territory and in just a few turns he's out too. Alex gets one city, I get the rest. Now I have him in a potential pincer move. I load up the Iroquois cities with all sorts of armament. Alex remains tied up with Gandhi. Both have MIs but no MAs;for some reason Alex went for Space Flight rather than Ecology. Sorry, pal, no escape to Alpha Centauri this time. I sit around for a couple of decades building up about 250 MAs, all of which sit on Alex's borders. Finally, Gandhi sues for peace. Hmm, it's decision time soon. Shaka keeps the peace for a little while longer though. Then - what is he thinking? Gandhi attacks. Probably a smart move - most of our forces are committed to the upcoming Greek campaign. Fortunately, almost all the forces we used to dispatch Hammy are still intact. We can withstand India's puny prodding for a fair while. Let's finish this now - we drop our forces into position outside various Greek cities under the RoP, the declare war. Over half of Greece disappears in one turn. Gandhi wastes time pillaging Shaka's Babylonian land; Greece shrinks to four or five cities and Shaka is just a tile or two short. For the first time in the game, the mighty Zulu Democracy falls into Anarchy, but we conveniently rushed Longevity just the previous turn so most of the cities remain orderly and we produce just enough to take one more city from Alex; we survive one final turm with a single culture flip, but we have enough for the win. My troops went over into Bablyion and were beat up pretty bad so I decied to fire Tactical nuke on to their capitol to kill hammurabi and it worked! It worked, but also caused Portugal and the Hitties to declare war on me. So I acted appropialy and asked my allies(scandinavia and greece) for backup. i took out the Hittes first as they were still in the midevil era. They came down quikly. And as soon as I'm done with them greece comes to me and asks for an alliance vs. the Dutch after being threatened by the dutch I was more than happy to agree. So seeing as the dutch were close to my colony-cities. I attacked them next. They quikly wanted peace and I needed troops other places fast, We had peace. That still left portugal. I decied it would be easy to wipe them out with an I.C.B.M. I launched 2 to wipe out portugal's king. When i launched the second one america and Rome declared war soas always I sent troops into America and capyured San Diego and Atlanta. Then I took Washington. Once I destroyed America, Germany declared war. I got peace with Germany and then out of the blue a Viking sub attacked one of my battle ships and since I had got peace with Rome and destroyed an alliance Greece hated me. So I decied that a war vs. the Vikings who could invade me so I was getting peace with them. Then the mongols and the Ottomans signed an alliance with the Dutch vs. me So instead of troops I sent aircraft instead. The Ottomans quikly signed a peace treaty and that was over. Then, everything came crashing down as I was still at war but I did not have a source of oil becouse they were furious with me and any body that had it was in Future tech. along with me so no one would trade it and was at a lost so I made peace with every body and now I am krippled and have to stay at peace becouse all I can build is obselete. Now I am at peace and trying to bost my econmy with little help.

RAR-Siamese Bulldogs

I haven't posted one of my games in a while, maybe some have noticed. I didn't stop playing, I actually played a lot. I just never got around to putting up my games. In the time between my fourth game put here and now I have completed... oh... maybe five games. Three random map emperor wins too!! Yayyy. One Byzantine win in Middle ages scenario. Now, on to what I am supposed to be talking about. Read on, there are big world wars!If you are familiar with the Rise and Rule mod, then you will know how complex it is. That is why I chose to play it. This won't be my first RAR game so I already know a lot. I chose 70% continents, large world, monarch, Siam, and random everything else. My capitol's position was an interesting one, situated on a small peninsula. I got a good start easily keeping up with the AI. It all looked peacful, until the vikings found a city in a horribly aggressive spot. They aimed to steel my incense, horses, AND iron! This means war!I didn't have my Siamese swordsmen (4.1.1 replaces swordsmen) so I made tons of archers. The attack went smoothly, my side having minimal casualties, replacing their badly placed city with my own. I think I conquered one more city then sued for peace, getting two cities. I was ahead in tech and grabbing a couple wonders. Those included Sun Tzu ad the Sphinx. This is a deadly combination, equivilant to Sun Tzu and Leonardoes Workshop in the normal game. Since the end of the 1st Viking war I had been planning a second one. Now stockpiling Siamese swordsmen I was just waiting. I hit them hard with my awesome UU, took one city, two, three, four, and five. Good bye Vikings. This war left me in a dominant position over the rest of the known world. With the rest of the middle ages I was at peace. Letting the Babylonians and Germans (two others on my continent) be to themselves. I was tech leader and just built wonders and infrastructure. The Persians were an extremely important Civilization in this game. On a large island just north of my continent. They were my rival in tech. Then the industrial age came. I got in a good two or three techs ahead of Persia. I beelined for rep. parts, which gave me leathernecks and. rifleman. The Repeating rifle, giving me Bedouin Raiders and Cavalry. All of the advanced nations during this time were just building up armies, includig me. I switched to a Federal Republic(had been democracy rest of game). Somewhere in there I expressed my power by conquering a large portion of Germany. After the 1st German war, I planned a second. I was ready. During this time the diplomatic tensions between the worlds powers were growing. The turn before I was going to attack the Germans, disaster. The tensions between me and Persia boiled over. They declared war on my Empire. To this day I still don't know what triggered it. I signed about half the against the Persians, attempting to decrease their pull in the world. Alliance led to alliance, and soon it was a full fledged world war. The powers I thought of as the Axis in this world war were the Persians, Babylonians, and the Germans. All aligned against me. My goal was to hold of the Persians cronies, and possibly launch a massive invasion of the Persian island. Clipper after clipper were sent to transport the massive invasion force. The amphibious landing would be carried out by my Leathernecks. This force was assembled soon enough and my ships set sail across the small crossing. Obviously the Persians were not expecting this and the city had only two riflemen in it. This begun my permanent stay in Persia. Persepolis was burned to the ground along with one other city, both replaced with my own. No other ground was ever gained on that bloody island. The war slowly winded down, although international relations were ever the same.I wanted revenge for the treachery of the Germans and Babylonians. This would be an easy task with my MKIV tanks(ww1 style). The Babs and Germans had Napoleonic units. Not much planning was needed. I hit them hard and conquered them both within 15 turns. Now my continent is to myself. I am at peace. The 540 turn game was nearing its end. So I planned one last invasion of the Romans to my west. I think I had 5 transport all carrying 8 units prepped. Rome was at about Babylonian techs, so not much resistance was expected. I landed in Rome, and a bunch of other coastal cities. Rome had a MPP with Iro. so they had to go too. The whole world was signed against them. Tanks and jeeps slowly rolled over Rome, then I hit the Iro. The both of them were gone in short order. With this much territory and about 11 turns left, I began building The League of Nations. I buttered up everyone. With 6 turns left in the game, I built it. The votes came in. I won a diplomatic victory!!That was close to a histograph victory. I was NOT expecting a diplo victory especially with League of Nations which goes obsolete fast. Fun fun fun. Experimenting with the mod was great. Hope you enjoyed it!

Brennus of the Celts part I

All begun in 4000 B.C. At this time one of the Celt leaders, Brennus gathered all Celt, became Monarch of Celts and decided to found the first Celt city of Entremont..We found that our world consists mainly of huge archipelagos, there are also some roaming barbarian tribes but we are not afraid of them. This is all we knew at this time, in the very beginning of our organised existence. Some elders of our community say that there are nine ancient civilizations that live somewhere out there, but none can confirm that. We hope we will be able to find them and begin friendly relations. Will they be willing to trade with us? Will they be friendly? We are a peaceful nation but once attacked we never forget! Our first warrior scouts were sent to look for luxuries and suitable places where we could establish new cities. We also hoped to find another human beings, and we found them! One of our scouts found an ancient village, but when he entered three barbarians attacked him. Luckily he managed to defend himself and at the end of the day he was the only survivor. Not every scout was so lucky…Thanks to great efforts of whole nation we colonized big areas of our archipelago. We had in our possession big reserves of silk, furs and ivory. This is keeping us happy and it helps to overcome difficult times. With discovery of few groups of elephants we have finally met the first of the nine civilizations we heard about, the Americans. Just few years later we have met the Aztecs. After all we didn’t find them very cooperative but our relations were rather friendly until… without any reason the Americans attacked our town of Verulamium. Only because of the great bravery of the city garrison and quick reinforcements we have contained and stopped this unprovoked aggression. As we were not prepared to this war we demanded a peace treaty. Significant casualties forced the American president to sign it. Being attacked we made a considerable effort to build our armed forces. Like I said before “Once attacked we never forget”. During this time the nasty Aztecs demanded our furs and in the counter offer they proposed to… let us live. There could be only one answer: NO. The situation was pretty the same as with the Americans, so we acted in the same way. We signed a peace treaty after killing many Aztec soldiers. Their army was really big but out of date.In the mean time we continued to explore our world. As our archipelago was divided only between us, the Americans and the Aztecs we had to look for other contacts with the help of our naval units. Luckily there was a passage to the other archipelago possible to reach by the simplest unit. And so we found the civilizations of Mayas, Incas and Egyptians. Some time later we found the Greeks, a really backward nation. The reason of it was a small island their occupied by themselves and lack of any units capable to move on the sea. Later on, we have met the Koreans and the Persians. The last contacted civilization were the Iroquois. Finally, after years of preparations we were ready to pay back our neighbours. What was really helpful in achieving a military build up was the construction of the Statue of Zeus. The multiple units of the Ancient Cavalry were a very strong addition to our army of Spearmen and Gallic Swordsmen. We were ready to wage a war!And it started. After swift campaign there were only few American towns that didn’t fall. To get to them we signed a trespass agreement with the Aztecs. Shortly after the Americans were wiped out of the map! Sadly, in spite of great victories of our elite units none great leader showed up during the battles. We think that the perfection and bravery of all involved units made this campaign so successful. Each unit had its own great commander, that is why none was brought higher than the others. With the Americans gone we still remembered the betrayal of the Aztecs. Having the trespass agreement, we have set up a trap to catch two groups of their horsemen, archers and warriors (16 units altogether). When the time will come, they will be executed. We are preparing a second trap for a big group of pikemen and spearmen, which consists of some 15-20 units. Our great nation was very effective during the Great Wonder race. We own The Great Library, The Statue of Zeus, Knights Templar, Sun Tzu’s Academy, Smith’s Trading Company, Sistine Chapel. However, one terrible accident has happened. We were in the competition for the Leonardo’s Workshop. We were just about to finish it when the Persians did that before us. The worst thing was that we could not change our production to anything without loosing 200 shields, but we didn’t have the choice. Very sad event, everyone felt terribly disappointed. Knowing the necessity of constant territorial expansion, we established two small cities on the other archipelago we found before. The situation was rather difficult as there were a lot of Incas and Mayas settlements. Finally we managed to establish two cities on the seaside. As our military was too weak to give good defence force to all our cities (we still have this problem) we could assign only one unit of spearmen per city. The diplomatic relations with Incas and Mayans were very good so we weren’t afraid. After some time we started receiving reports of Incas army manoeuvres just beside our cities. We felt something was wrong so we decided to sign a trespass agreement with them. They signed it without any obstacles but just after that they attacked and got our cities. I’m sure all peoples will know now how much their worlds worth! This war ended quickly. They seemed not to have any naval units available to transport their army on our land. We couldn’t take back those cites because of the same problems. The peace treaty was signed shortly after the war or I would rather say small conflict started. Some time later we decided to send an expedition in order to establish two cities, which would let us control dyes. The only concern was the proximity of Incas territory. We had nothing to loose so we tried. The situation became identical to the other described before! We finally understood that Incas didn’t want us to settle down on “their” archipelago. The only difference was that we had new weapons, well-trained soldiers and many advanced transport ships (called Caravels). We signed mutual alliance with Mayas and Egyptians (Inca neighbours). And so we sent an Army of Ancient Cavalries, Crusaders, Knights and Pikeman. Meanwhile the Inca found the secret of Gun Powder. The battles became bloodier, but we were progressing all the time. We lost 7 units that were healing their wounds in newly conquered town as it flip back to the Incas. We took this city back just after that but our comrades were already gone… we miss them a lot. During one of assaults the commander of a Crusaders squad showed to everyone his brilliance on the battlefield and this way we had our first Military Great Leader. In the decisive phase of the war we were disposing of totally new and unknown unit. The Cavalry. Soon the Inca’s capital city fell down. The war was over. There are some cities left but they are too weak to make any difference to us. Our democracy was hardly supporting the long lasting war.

I thought I had launched D Day only to find...

It was another Dieppe instead. The raid on DieppeAfter not playing Civ 3 (straight old vanilla civ v1.29) for about a year I decided to get back into the game. After a couple of quick disasters playing at Monarch level it all came back to me this game playing as the Russians on a large archi(you know the rest) on Monarch level.Found myself vs Rome & Eygpt on large land. Destroyed both those 2 countries. Now in 1955 after leading for more than half the game I find those darn Indians who have wiped out the Chinese have taken control. I need to war them and regain my rightful place as Supreme Leader, lol.My military adviser says "Im weak" compared to the Indians. WEAK. I have 50+ Modern Armour, 50MI - ok, they have 165MI and about 60MA but im not deterred. Using newly acquired diplomatic skills I gain MPP's with the only other 2 civs surviving, hehe & both those 2 countries share common borders with those Indians. :)I launch my invasion fleet: 3 carriers chock full of bombers & Jet fighters. 8 Battlewagons, 2 Destroyers, 1 sub protecting 5 transports & 1 gallaon. 44 units in all, should be enough me thinks. 2 Armies, MA, MIs, tanks (? why did I load them when I had more MAs?) and my single remaining marine and 6 artillery.Declare war. Takeover small Indian town on my continent without loss. Destroy 1 Indian Army on a small island.Things going good.My MPP kicks in and the other 2 civs declare war, things go better :)Land my forces near a small Indian city. On a penisula. My BBs and Bombers bomb the city defenders and surrounding countryside trying to knock out the roads. Hills 2 squares away, if I can knock out those roads will make attacking me harder.Land 40 out of 44 units (the 4 arty in Galleon 1 move away) D Day is GO.The indians attackWave after wave of MA's attack and get destroyed. My mighty defending MIs take a terrible beating. Soon the MAs are forced to defend, losses mount. Finally this turns carnage is over. The smoking ruins show half my force is gone. My tank army fought valiantly but surcomed to overwhelming force but not before destroying an Indian tank army.I launch another round of navel bombardment & air attacks against the city and enemy units nearby. We attack the Indian city and raze it killing the MI and other defenders without much loss but this small victory brings no joy.I look at my remaining forces. All MIs down to 1 or 2 health. Same with remaining MAs. I send my old tanks on a suicide mission to buy time and kill damaged enemy MAs. They succeed but at their cost.If only I had another 10 MIs fresh to throw into the battle I could hold but alas it wasnt to be and the retreat order is given. Troops abandon equipment and file back onto the transports. Due to miscalculation my marine and 1 arty unit have to be left behind. My 4 spare arty are turned around and we sail off. What I thought would be my D-Day has turned out to be just another Dieppe. But we live and learn..... Next time, next time will be big, huge, MASSIVE.S

Dun's 4th- yea, already Dun's fourth game(shared here)

OK. This will be my third thread in a row. Yup, I have another story to share with you. Look at my second post to see a file with all of my screenshots. It is a word thing with about 10 pictures. To the game! After my last game on Emporor where I lost by less than one turn I decided I had to prove to myself that I , in fact, could win on Monarch in most situations. So, the size was Huge, since that is the hardest size map most times. Random settings cept for 70% Ocean Pangea. Chose the Japs. Obviously monarch level. Start with THREE cattle within range of my capitol and a river. These things allowed me to out-expand the every single AI. This games plan was to switch to- what are you thinking?- MONARCHY! Yea, switch up my average game plan! Get those Samuri into play! Take over someone. This was something I hadn't done since my regent days. Remember the Sumerians from my last game? The culture kings? They were right near me. I planned to take them out with my Samuri. I didn't actualy grab any of the Ancient wonders, but my friends the Sumerians did. Kept up in tech. Ancient age totaly uneventful. Middle ages time! Beeline to Chivalry. Do manage to get Sistine Chapael as the Sumerians gobble up Sun Stuz's. GOOD for them. Just means more for me. BOOM, Chivalry and start making Sam units in some cities. Build up good sized attack force. BANG, hit the Sumerians, take a couple cities. I tore them in half. The other half still hanging on to the capitol. There may have been other things happening at this time but I don't remember. Just getting reddy for the next Sumerian war. Incans build an empire by conquering Mongolia and half of Iro. This was mostly my doing because I refused Incan "request" and that led to a war, which I signed the Mongolians to. They were totaly conquered by Incans. I take the Sumerian capitol in the next war! HAHAHA, how ya like that you rat ba.... Unfortunatly I signed Otto in and he swept across most of the Sumerians before I could finish my siege of Ur. Otto's sipahi were too much for old Gilgy. The Japenese are a religous civ, which means they have 1-2 turn anarchy, which in turn they can have sudden strategy switches like from say... Monarchy to Republic. I used this and switched to Republic. By this point I decided the Incans were to powerful and I topple their regime. I sign the whole world against them and oh, how they crumple to the two front war. Industrial age! I have a booming economy. I got JS and Shakespear in middle ages. This made my capitol the largest city in the world. Beeline to Scientific method, get TOE, Hoover. By far I am the tech leader. During the toppling of the Incans, I realized the Ottomans had too much power, so I planned to take them down. But for now my technologicaly inferior (and quite small) neighbor had to go, they were the Aztecs. They fell to my Blitzes with Cavs in the north, but in the south their hill cities provided trouble. That is untill my Tanks come through. They take the southern front pretty easily and I wiped my hands and said "there goes the aztecs, another fly swatted". Now my full attention was turned to the growing Ottoman empire. I built up a large tank force. The main reason why Otto had to go and not Mr. Netherlands to my south was the Ottomans didn't have Replacable Parts and I was willing to bet they wouldn't research it quickly enough for it to be useful in their fight against me. Think of it, tanks vs. rifleman. It would be a slaughter. The only exception in this perfection is the sipahi, which had an equal attack to the tank's defense. Only a small glitch as I would be on the offense most of the time. My enitial blitz took out a lot more than I thought when I looked at the replay, took out most of east Otto. I would make a statement at Istanbul(more for my pleasure than to do anything to the AI), I was going to bomb it into the ground. I succeded at this wonderfully. Brought it down to size one, no improvements, and no units. It was glorious. The rest of them fell with little resistance. The attack on France was in the workings even before my attack on Otto. My spies created an international incident which caused a war. I wonder how this happened? ;) France fell withing a few turns. This was a true blitz move! I had the Luftwaffe.... oh, I mean my air force... ahem... bomb out all of the French cities. This gave my Air force more experience. They fell without any other nations intervenement. Next were the Egyptians who were in the middle ages. I invaded them without any deliberation. I hit them, and I hit them hard. After the first couple of cities, I got my Modern Armor. This let me mop up Egypt even more quickly. I truely felt like Hitler atop his perch in Europe. The last power left was the Netherlands. They had only about 120 Infantry because I had stopped selling rubber to them. I had a small detour taking out America but that's hardly worth mentioning. I took out about 45 Infantry on the first turn and took about 8 Dutch cities. Their core cities were taken and they retreated into the HUGE montain ranges of my world and were eventualy destroyed. Now all that was left of my enemies was the east. This was made of a rabble of Industrial age fools. After declaring war on them one by one I took out ALL resistance behind a certain point, and could now start serious conquering. First the Incans fell, then the Romans. Both easily with about 11 Modern Armor Armies. The coalition- as I came to refer to these resistors as- was down to the Mayans and Hittites. Hittites gone, on the threshhold of Domination. Down to the last few opposing cities on this Pangea continent. The final turns were upon me. It is fitting that on the VERY last turn of my game I captured the last enemy city on my continent. It was a proud moment when this happened. I clicked end turn, one, final, time. "You have won a Domination victory"!!! The final stat thing were: 63 Infantry, 4 Mechs(never bothered wit them), 21 bombers, 14 armies, 214 Modern Armor, 3 tac. nukes, a total of 415 units. Tokugawa the Magnificent they called me. Thats 14 steps up. View that file in my 2nd post to see a bunch of Pics. Notice that on my Hall of Fame the Japs line it. First and last. This game is #1 with 4,694. A HUGE game for me. Now on to Emporor... again.<IMG SRC=http://www.1bcciv.com/OldPhotos/victory screen(be).jpg>

American History

This is a story inspiered by History Dude "life of an Iroquious"it is not exactly the same, but still close. After getting Australia settled, I cut back to one unit defending per city and switched to Republic. I'd also gotten the Great Library, figuring that by the time I contacted everyone else I'd be caught up gaining the techs from it....or so I thought. 1000 AD, St Augustine reported that France was first in tech, having researched to Metallurgy and Theology. I figured the heck with it and went for Education, banking and Economics, getting Smith's.It was about this time that the Dutch came within distance and settled on the edge of my borders on an outlying island, 1525 AD. Started trading Comms and Techs and all, gaining Astronomy, Navigation, Military Tradition, and maps of the known world. Suprisingly, for my 5,000 year isolation, I was in third for score, and third in Culture, behind the Mayans and Incans in both. Tech wise, I was first after the exchanges, anywhere from one to fifteen techs ahead of everyone else. I had Physics over a couple Civs, while a few were only two to four techs into the Middle Ages.Naturally, once into the Industrial Era, I headed straight for Scientific Method and poof, popped a SGL with it. Started TOE, got Industrialization and Sanitation right before I finished it, Gaining Atomic Theory and Electronics from it, traded around again, and had ALL the gold in the world, bleeding the rest of the AI dry. Keep in mind, with no gold they couldn't establish embassies and find out where I was exactly (although yeah right they DID know  ), and of course I steadfastly refused to trade my maps with them. Used the SGL for Hoovers, triggering the GA, gaining Replaceable Parts, and Corporation through Combustion and everything in between...From there on it was cruise control, just a matter of deciding WHO to go after. Germany, occupying the tip of South America seemed like a good start, at least until the Incans rudely asked for Dyes and I just as rudely said no. They declared war. Oh well, I wanted to get Magellans which they barely beat me to. Send in the Marines! The Marines amphibbed 3 cities, which I used to unload tanks in and went rampaging into 3 other Incan cities, at which point they sued for peace, giving me another couple cities in the bargain. At that point, it was getting ridiculous, as I hadn't gotten around to d/l the 1.22 patch and was sitting at 30,000 gold (I'd forgotten about the double gold bug until I'd amassed over 10,000 gold, and Persia giving 256 gpt for Refining didn't hurt there either!)Naturally with that much gold I could give a couple thousand gold to EVERYONE, build the UN and there you go! The Incans voted for the Mayans, and everyone ELSE voted for me, and that was that. With the double gold thing, I hardly considered it a real game, but just enjoyed the opportunity to finally play against 15 civs without the computer taking forever between turns...Then and now...333 mhz, 4 GB hard drive, 128 mb ram, standard monitor, external CD burner, 24X, internal CD romNow... 2.8 gHz, 40 GB hard drive, 256MB ram, two CD roms, 1 with a burner and the other with a DVD player.Granted, it was a combination birthday/Christmas present. I used to complain about getting ripped off for having them so close together.....not any more :D

OH MY FREAKING GOD!!! NOOO!

I had just completed a Monarch Zulu game. I decided to step up to Emporor. It was a small map. I made it a cold one too, with normal age. Small continents. I chose French. Difficulty:Emporor. I started in a area with a wheat in range but no fresh water. A good spot I thought. The Americans to my north. Sumerians to my south. Russians to my southwest. I got into a war with America, I took to cities. I didn't start the wars though. Then the Sumerians decide to "Help" and they take about 5 cities. Get REALLY rich. Stay up in tech. BAM industrial age. I do some lucky researching getting monopolys on techs that the others didn't research. Got 2/3 Industrial wonders.(I had gotten 2 Middle Ages wonders. Now the past in this game was all peace peace9atleast for me, Sumera had conquered their neighbor-Russia). And it was going to continue to be peace. Modern age, everyone nice to me, I decide i'll go for diplomatic win. Sumer. gets Fission, I steal it. I start building U.N. Sabotage Ur's U.N. production. I didn't realize how close Sumeria was to a 100k victory. I got down to one turn on U.N. I build it, before the turn ends I get the message. I had lost by not even a TURN!!!!!!!!! I was ABSOLUTELY FURIOUS. I was about to cry, 1/4 of a turn away from a DIPLOMATIC VICTORY!! ON MY FIRST EMPOROR LEVEL GAME!! I hate you Sumeria.............Until next time........

Sassanids: Fall of Rome

I had only successfully played this one once before as the Vandals. It was a close one too! By the time I beat up on Western Rome, Eastern had so many victory points, it was a close thing to knock them off, and occupy those victory locations in enough time to get to 35000 VPs.I had tried it as Celts and AngloSaxons, AND Huns a couple times before without success (always on Regent). I think I had to play it on Warlord to win as the Vandals :( Anyway, just had a win on Regent as the Sassanids. Managed to get all the non-Barbarian wonders. The basic strategy was to build horsemen and go for the tech that allows Cavalry. Once I had a few cavalry and catapults, I took the closest Byzantine cities, then sat back and did a bit of expansion. Getting ALL the barb tribes on my side was a big plus. After that, I took a couple more Byz cities, and by then they had lost eight. By about turn 100 or so, I took the Greek VP locations, and started expanding into Italy and Central Europe. Used an ROP to squash the Ostrogoths, then took out the Anglo-Saxons, and the Franks helped me take out the Vandals (that eight cities elimination thing works pretty well!). Got a vp win with about 10 turns left!

One World, Under Catherine

I hadn't ever really finished a game as Russia (even that dang March GOTM that I posted!). And they just seem to be the classic tribe to play as communism, so I wanted to play one out that way.It took a while, but here is the culmination!I had never really played with Communism much before and found it to be quite handy in this game. The one thing I've gathered is that, you MUST wait until you are basically already a powerhouse to switch. Then it just gives you that added oomph. Too many times in the past, when I was still a fairly fragile tribe, I've switched and had it backfire. So what I'm wondering is about score. How much can I pump the score on this game. I've reduced the entire planet to only one other Egyptian city that is land locked and surrounded by mountains. My plan is to play it a bit here and there, disband most of my military, switch to Democracy, and pump the Tech tree, without expanding too much to get Domination win. I figure, if it doesn't bore me too much (it'll be a nice cure for insomnia!) I'll play it out until 2050, and see just how much I can pump the score with happy citizens, and Future Techs.Once I have my military way pared back (with just a military cordon around the Egyptians, and enough to respond to any Barbs that pop up in the wilderness), I'll start disbanding all those little towns I made in the interstices for added military support, and then start expanding all my cities into mega-cities with tons of specialists to pump the score!

The plight of the Byzantines

Alone in a barbaric world hey? That is when I started to think about something completly differnt. I was going to play my first OCC(One City Cultural). It was a standard pangea map 30% land. I chose the Persians for three reasons. The first being their early strong UU. Reason #2 was their scientific trait which allows for an early start on writing, which brings me to Literature which brings Great Library. The third reason was their Industriousness. That allowed for an extra base city shield. It also allowed for faster railing when the time came. So I start by 3 silks(on 2 plains forest), 2 bonus grassland(some hidden under jungle/forest), about six normal grass tiles, 3 jungles, 3 forests, and 3 coast. I thought this was a good start, but little did I know how good. I started with 2 warriors, meeting the Americans, Maya, Iroqouis, Aztecs, and England. I did get That Great Library which brought me to education, but not before getting me to Gunpowder. After that it was slow goin and I creeped my way into the Industrial Age. I built The Great Library, Sistine Chapel, The Hanging Gardens, and JS Bachs Cathedral. (Also Intel. Agency) I was sooooooo lucky with my start, in the mountains next to my start tile there was iron, and in the grassland next to start there were horses!!! So I got the cultural win in 2013 AD. I cut it pretty close on that One! I got 843 points on that one. If you do this yourself, The Great Library is the key factor! Oh, and get the culturiestest Wonders you can.

The Exiles

And in this age it came to pass that Nation of 1BC sent out a space ship to explore the unknown of the universe. It contained many distinguished citizens seeking out a new life. After many years of travel and hibernation, they came to a new land. The natives they met seemed to call their home Noitazilivic. Unfortunately, the hibernation process had affected their knowledge of the technology of their homeland. They were left to start again in a new, strange land. Upon arrival, E. Disillusion, the feudal alchemist, had wandered off. Many took no mind as he normally went errant and always came back with a story. He later staggered back into town with a stinking bag in his hands and a Big Yellow Top Hat upon his head, but that is another story. From the talk of the natives, they heard whispers of hostile groups of people rooming the lands. The Exiles of 1BC (as the people called themselves) met with each other to talk about their next step. Finally, a decision was made! The people of the Community would build for themselves a city under the shadow of the mountain where they landed. Von Clausewitz arose as a leader in the Community. But, even as much as they feared the barbarians, they feared more a dictador. So, the people chose to form themselves into a democracy, where the choice of the people would rule supreme. A Constitution was quickly drawn up and passed by the People. But, the government is not perfect. The natives had already came into the Community and saw its flaws. Prince TORARADICAL arrived from MAELRI and with his guidance, they built the city on the strongest of foundations.Even so, the Community grows slowly. Many years has passed since a ship from 1BC has arrived (many more space travels were planned in this age) with more colonists. We know that the citizens of this grand nation were not cowards. But many of the people wonder, where are they? But, even as not being from the nation of 1BC, I have faith. The people shall come. No nation would abandon their own people.

Dun's second tale- The King's Last Stand?

First off, let me explain the The King's Last Stand has nothing to do with the actual game, but rather the difficulty level and if this will be my last monarch game. But more on that later. After playing a game on a small size map with the Dutch that had a lot of small dimensions, I decided I was in the mood for something a little... bigger. Large map. Continents. 60% water. Restless barbarians. Random temperature and such. Monarch. This would be my 4th game on monarch(I think)difficulty. My last game was played as the Dutch. This game would be played as the Zulu. Yes, the Zulu. They are often consedered one of the worse tribes that are highly specialized. With Militaristic and Expansionist and the Impi UU. Almost certainly if I hadn't been the Zulu my game would have turned out differently. I got a grassy start with some hills and mountains nearby. It was a river start that had a lot of good land nearby. My plan? Get to literature and build Great Library, go 0% science until education. Well... more on that a little later. I started in the middle of a fairly roomy contnent that only had 5 civilizations on it- all American. The expansionist trait helped TONS because I got about 5 techs from tribes and got an early tech lead with a monopoly on Mathematics.(I lost this do to missmanaged diplomacy) It was war war war. I tried to stay out of the Incan-American war. I succeded at this but my closest neighbor-the Aztecs- wanted my cities. They declared war but I had my fast Impis rushed into place so they didn't get anything out of the attack. I managed to out-expand everyone on my continent. Although I shudder to think how much land I could have claimed if the aztecs hadn't sneak attacked me. Remember my plan? Build the Great Library? Well I was about 5 turns away when Mecca Completed it. This set me back about 350 shields.  . THEN the Aztecs went at it AGAIN. They sneak attacked me AGAIN. They did nothing but I wonder why they were so intent on hurting me. Oh, yea. I forgot to mention that the Aztecs set off a Golden Age for me in about 500 BC! This was a TOTAL waste! I was still in despotism. I didn't even get a wonder out of this horrible GA!!! Well most of this time the Aztecs and Incans were at it. The Aztecs were south, Incans north. So they ht in my land. I stayed out of this war though. That brings me to the Middle ages. I swapped to republic which forced me to disband all but about 12 workers and 13 Impis. This was the lowest I had ever been. The Incans could have easily crushed me at ANY moment. This was truly nerve racking. So with Republic research I stayed caught up in techs. Got to Democracy, and switched to it. The middle ages were truly uneventful. The only important thing was my fabulous economy at the end of the middle ages. This was because I bought for contacts with the other continents and made some AMAZING deals which got me up about three techs, got me up to 1,100 gold, 130 some GPT, And deprived simply EVERYONE of cash for themselves. The industrial age came in with me first because of my foreignly fuled research which allowed 5 turns per tech in Middle Ages, And 7-8 turns in Industrial. I got a huge lead into this era and got TOE, then Hoover. I sold only as many techs as kept me at surplus on 100% research. I got Rep. Parts, and had one source of rubber. Pumped out over 75 infantry before tanks with my huge Industrial base. The Incans had conquered the Americans, and half of the Aztecs. Once they started on the Mayans I said enough is enough. So what do I do? I - for once- stood up for the little people. I had tanks, and the Incans didn't. I realized this could destroy me, or it could win the game. I signed MPP's with the major players to make Inca collapse into Fascism. This worked perfectly. As my spy showed me I had a bunch of tanks, and the Incans had a ton more Infantry than I did. So begun the war. I started by siezing all of the Incan's Aztec and Mayan holdings. This was a lot more work than it sounds. It took me a GREAT deal of time to do this. But once I got the 2 Armies it sped up some. After I wiped those out, I turned to Incan's homeland. I buldoze like 2 cities, then peace becuse of the ABSOLUTELY horrible war weariness. BUT my MPP friends attacked the Incas and I got into the war AGAIN. This brought the same Weariness back. So I chose to fall into a 6 turn anarchy into Monarchy. Thsi lasted until MPPs expire. Then, Peace with everyone. 8 TURN ANARCHY, Democracy. Now the Moder Age came and b4 I had gone into Monarchy I had gotten Ec. by myself, and Comps from Persians(who I brought into modern age hoing for a free tech). Back into Demo. and syn. Fibers comes in. Now the Ultimate Modern Armor is unleashed on the Aztecs who I actualy destroyed in my 8 turn anarchy. Hmmm.. I probably have the tech order messed up but what ever. Now who's lauphin Mr. Aztecs!!! Me!!! HAHAHA. For the first time ever I stole a tech. Fission from my Bestess friend Salamanca. I got it! My BFF Salamanca attacked me! We were gracious and he was giving me about 800 GPT! (Prolly realised I was getting close to a space race vic.). Well I took his little Ice rock island with ease, and took out a couple other cities. Peace. Now it was time for Maya to go, so they declare war on me. Oh, this had nothing to do with my spys :D . They're gone with no war weariness. Peace. Robotics. Hold on to last part of Space Ship. Build 6 tac. Nukes, 6 ICBM's. Start last component, nuc the frickin heck out of Inca, take their main cities. World at war with me. 2 turns left... nuke some more, take more... 1 turn left... take more... END OF GAME!!! As much fun as it was I was glad it was over! Space Race Victory n 1892 AD, 3095 points. No one else ever built as much as a part of it. One of my last Monarch games. Last one? Maybe. I'll try my luck on Emporor later on. If I get creamed, then I'll go crawling back to Monarch's feet. Now THAT was one LONG post.heh. Now for a pic or two. Can you put more than one pic on one post? That picture shows former nations boundaries. The Peninsula on the other continent was China but I didn't have the right color. I don't see a way to put more than one pic on one post right now, do you people know?

Well this ought to be fun?????

Been snowing for 5 hours ... second day of snow ... nothing to do outside ... so ... time to tune up for cIV. :D:D:DI strongly suspect that this should be in a disasters and defeats forum, but hei noi. ;)Huge Map, temp, wet, 4 Billion.

Snapshots?

I was wondering how you get those wonderful snapshots of your games, if you could tell me that would be great

OK, What Gives?

Five 1.29 games played through at Monarch level so far - all but one of them I have won by diplomacy, and mostly by lop-sided votes, too. The other win was a Space Race (in Leo's Santa game, so I don't really count it).Clearly, it's time to switch off the diplomatic win option, but this has got me really confused as at the lower levels it took me a long time to get my first diplo wins, and I was expecting much more aggressive games at Monarch.I never have been much of a warmonger, but maintaining positive relations with the AI civs can be tough. In my most recent game finished last night, though, I (as Lincoln) won a 4-2 vote in 1740AD while under a fairly weak attack from the Russians and Persians. Through the rest of the game I had only been in three other wars - a quick five-turn early war with the French to grab two adjoining cities, another medieval war with the French to wipe them out, and another five-turn skirmish with the English immediately after that in which they grabbed one of my new French cities. In all of this I only lost one settled city. Throughout the entire game I had a relatively weak military, and until about the middle of the Industrial era, I was lagging in tech, having failed to get either the Great Library or Theory of Evolution in my own right, which are parts of my standard strategy. In the Industrial era, which I entered last, but exited first, I was able to get into a position of strength by some nifty trading boosted by a GA. I did eventually get control of the Great Library by stealing it from the French, learning an interesting fact in the process - if the first tech you get in a particular turn from owning the GL is Education, your tech grab still continues for the rest of that turn; the GL only becomes obsolete at the end of the turn. The GL only worked for me for a single turn, but I got maybe ten techs out of it. Not quite enough to get me parity with the AIs, but close, although I quickly fell behind again. Also, for once my capital was not my most productive city; instead Philadelphia was generating over 100 shields per turn late in the game, nearly twice the output of any other city.

Ok where is the Pirate L&TT thread?

The Brig of War "Claw" Captained by the notorious El Gato, a 25 year old Dutch Duke, already having found 4 pirate loot catches's, killed one pirate and having a huge price on his head by Spain, massive estate, 8 wealth, and 11 fame, is hunting.
