Did anyone else happen to catch the finals for the mens' swimming 4x100 m Relay?? What a phenomenal finish for the American team!!!!!! (too bad for France! :P)

It was so close in the end that even after several replays I still could not tell who's hand slapped the wall first. What a great Olympics this has started out to be.

We need a thread for the upcoming football tournament in Austria and Switzerland.

Group A
Czech Republic - a good side, but a little bit past its prime
Portugal - one of the favorites
Turkey - a great outsider that IMHO may surprise us
Switzerland - the first candidate to be knocked out, had they not played at home
Portugal to go through, but what second team? I bet on Turkey, but the others stand a really good chance no less.

Group B
Croatia - who did they recruit from the Zagreb Zimmerframe Home?
Germany - tipped by everyone to win. The best tournament record. Even when they play bad, the Germans are to be reckoned with. But have you seen that coach?
Poland - Speaking of coaches... Anyway, the match with Germany is one to look forward to
Austria - Oh boy, how on earth did they get here? Ah, they are the organizers. How nice.
The weakest group. Germany's way to the quarter-finals paved, well in advance. With Poland trailing.

Group C
Netherlands - A nice side with a respectable record. But to start a tournament against the World Champion and then against the runners-up? Too much.
Italy - World Champion. Nothing to add
Romania - Clearly the number four of this deadly group. But hey, didn't they beat the Dutch in the qualifiers?
France - getting old and still going strong. New players on the rise.
This group is going to kill off a potential winner. If not Holland, then who?

Group D
Sweden - An outsider to lookout for
Spain - The great underachiever of international tournaments. When will their moment come? Never I think. They have the toughest league - that's why all the stars are worn out before the Euros and World Cups
Greece - Surprise winners last time round. Costing me a huge bet made before the tournament, that couldn't go wrong anymore, once the semi-finals had come round, unless.... Living proof, together with Denmark, Euros are great for outsider champions
Russia - Arrived by the skin of their teeth at the expense of England, the best side not present. Russia has the best coach in the world, they can make semi-finals on the basis of that alone.
Greece to drop, Russia to go through. Sweden or Spain? Sweden I say.

Well...my review on the Super Bowl game between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants...

IT SUCKED!!!

The game was pretty boring. The first quarter was decent and the fourth quarter was very intense, but the 2nd and 3rd were boring and full of stupid plays and thumbles...

Congrats to the Giants on winning. Poor Patriots lost when it matterd most. Very defensive game - would have liked to seen more scoring, but then again, the Giants are a defensive team. :P

If I was s Buffalo season ticket holder I would be very angry. They are losing one of their games and are second in line for the right to pay an outrageous amount to get it back. I felt bad for the Miami and Giants fans when that game was played in London, but this is even worse. The NFL and the owners already make tons of money, why do they feel the need to screw their fans and then have the gall to act like they're doing them a favor?

It was an enthralling film.

But then at the end of the movie I noticed this, after the credit's rolled:

I'm in the middle of a sturggle between siding with the Sens and the Ducks. I'm Canadian. The reason I've chosen the Sens as my playoff team is because they are a Canadian team. Ironically, the Ducks have many more Canadian players on their team (18 in total). So which one is more Canadian? But I'm sticking withe the Sens because the cup deserves to return to Canada (even though it's here for like 10 months a year lol).

Football sign up has started

I know it is early, but I have been mulling over the concept of a 1BC/Yahoo keeper league.

I'll cough up the league entrance fee so we can all get all the "for pay" goodies. There will be no charge to any one who plays.

Anyone else interested in a keeper league concept? If so reply here.

Points that will apply.

Rosters will be small.

Some type of "live", or semi-live draft will be used.

Point system will be a modification of "entry fee only" expert league scoring. This means that, for instance, a TD may be worth 60 points, and Yardage is a 1 to 1 ratio etc.

Other stuff that most are used to has quite a few changes also.

If there are 10 to 14 interested, I will create a league and we can begin to hammer out the details.

-Any Snooker fans around here? I am an avid fan and an amateur player myself. I'm rooting for Steve Davis but he's in a hard fight against Shaun Murphy. I like pool as well but when you get to a certain level there's few difficult shots. With snooker it's very, very hard, especially on a match table. The highest break I've gotten is 16 and that was pure luck.... Baseball season simulation

Using PECOTA predicted stats (baseballprospectus.com) on offensive starters and pitching rotations for all teams, I tried to model an entire season. For example,

The dbacks first game of the year has webb vs. jennings in CO. The CO offense is prediceted to score 5.02 runs per game over all ballparks. I multiply 5.02 by 1.14/1.05 (CO park factor/avg park factor CO plays in). Webb is predicted to have an era of 3.64. Taking his home/road splits from last year, that would make his road era over all ballparks to be 3.48. I multiplied this by 1.14 (CO park factor). I averaged 4.02 and 5.02 as the number of runs this offense vs. this pitcher would have in 9 innings. I used a poisson distribution to approximate the probability distribution of scoring between 0 and 12 runs for a situation where 4.52 runs per nine is the average. I ran a discreet random number generator using that probability distribution to randomly create a score assuming webb pitches 9 innings. I got that he would give up 6 in 9. However, if he is only predicted to average 6.72 IP per start and his home/road splits from last year would indicate that he will average about 6.4 IP per start when on the road.

If he is pitching poorly though, he will be pulled sooner. To model this, I looked at the game logs of 1700 pitched games in the AL and 1800 pitched games in the NL to create a regression of the innings below average a pitcher will pitch if he is giving up runs above his average. Using this, I came up with an equation that effectively says every 3 runs above or below their average changes their outing by an inning. Brandon webb, pitching at an era about 2.4 runs above his expected era, is expected to only last about 5.8 innings and give up 3.9 runs.

It then turns to the bullpen. This gets a little shaky. I assumed the bullpen has two halves, good relief, and bad relief. I assumed that if the starter left giving up less than 4 er, the better bp pitchers would be used. This wasnt based on any data but just my gut. The offense is still assumed to score 5.02 runs and the dbacks road, good bp (valverde, medders, lyon, viscaino, aquino) in colorado is assumed to have a 4.37 era. So, I assume a new poisson distribution about 4.70 and generate a new number for the number of runs CO would score against the BP if given 9 innings. The RNG spit back 4 runs. So, I multiply that number by 3.2/9 (or the number of innings left after webb leaves) and get that they will forfeit approximately 1.4 runs.

So, the dbacks should have a total of 5.3 runs scored against them. Doing the same for colorado, I get jennings giving up 1.6 in 7.1 and the bp giving up 1.9 in 1.9 innings and the diamondbacks lose 5.3-3.5
