problem with civ4 and vista

hey all i just bought the game and the cursor keeps blinking in game-play, i have above the rec require and win vista home basic how can i fix this problem? and what is causing it?

In the October GOTM topic, a discussion raised about city razing,
and i have some questions about that "game concept".

The first of all is the exact consequences of razing a city.
and by this i mean all aspects, like :
does it have an effect on other empires opinion about the razing dude ?
does it give any second hand advantage to the owner of the razed city ?

and, the second question is a very precise exemple in my current game where i razed a city. and i'd like to have your opinion about it.

its a prince level game on large map, with 8 civs.
i'm 2nd in the run behind the bizantine empire.
3rd comes the indian wich is the only civ i have very good relation with
4th comes the Zulu empire that has enslave 2 other empires (mali and spain) (capitulation)

the other civs doesnt matter.

the byzantine empire, around the year 1910 sneak attacked me, i was expecting this for several turns and i had a consequent army to recieve them, the war lasted for a while and after i took 1 or two small strategical cities i wanted (oil and uranium ressources in tundra), the war ended.

at this point, my military power was at a very low level (so was the byzantine army) after a quite tight war.

thats at this very moment that the zulu empire rushed me in with his two vassals openning a two front war that i couldnt afford.
however, i felt this coming and signed few turns before that a defensive pact with the idian empire, hoping they will make the malinese front easier to face.

i changed civics to a 100% aggressive settings, turned off my research to increase the culture setting so i can draft like mad without getting my cities break production.

they took one of my frontier major city in spite of my efforts preventing it.
after taking it back, the military balance was changing side, and finaly turned in my (relative) advantage.

here is the situation and here is the decision i made :

the space race was about to begin, and indians had a significant advantage, i thought there was no way to me in this game to win by domination or conquest, so i wanted to end this war, wich was possible now that my military power came back, and now that the zulu army broke on my defence.
in the other hand, i wanted to "punish" the zulu empire significantly without losing time and money with a city that would revolt back to them anyway in 10 turns.
so i rushed in their land and sieged a 18 size city, and razed it.
i thought that loss will defeat them more efficiently then anything else as they had like 6 cities + their 2 vassals.

after that i ended the war with them offering 390 gold and 14gold per turn.

i changed back my civics, began to build my army back by chain producing units in my 2 production specilized cities and began the space race... whatever.

does that raze choice make sens ?
if the situation exposal is precise enough, what would you done in such a case ?

A major question about Vassels

often i see downed relations due to a vassal state being their rival.

now how do i get rid of them as a vassal state w/o conqurering them

sorta like the ussr did with the east germans at the fall of the berlin wall.

as in gave back east germany

BTS & Vanilla Multiplayer Problems?

Hi all,

This may be a stupid question, but can I play a multiplayer match with my friend when I have BTS and she only has the vanilla Civ4? We've been trying to make matches to join but we can never find each other's game. We also tried Direct IP game but it gives an error message along the lines of our "central game components are incompatible". Both of us have patched our games to the latest patch and opened our firewalls to Civ4.

I've read somewhere that Civ4 multiplayer is integrated so I thought I shouldn't have this problem. Any clue what might be causing it?

Why cant I adjust the income adjuster?

Why can I not Adjust the Gold ammount? It shows kinda like the increase button for science and culture.

All I can adjust is the culture and science. :(

Why is the activation sound of the Taoist and confucious missionaries reversed?

The taoist missionary when used to spread the religeon uses the confucist sound file.

The same for confucious missionary it playes the taoist sound when spreading the religeon.

How do I fix this? Is it possible to do so without a patch? If not, What do I download?

how do i control crowded cities??

Hello. I'm very new to CIV IV and am only on my third game. I keep getting unhappy citizens claiming that the cities are too crowded. I have tried a variety of things (build more cottages, farms, and turn on avoid growth, etc.) to no avail.....any ideas??
Having crowded cities will subtract points, right?

i recently bought civilization 4 the complete edition and i was reading through the manual, its says that after instilation you can choose which one you would like to play i am running a 64 bit vista and after download not even a short cut is created, i launch the game and it always runs colonization which honestly i would like to play BTS some times please help me out

Increasing score

I just won my first game on Noble. (Pangea/dual/ G. Khan Vs Tokugawa/ domination only).

Unfortunately my score and ranking were both pretty low. I could have taken him out much sooner, possibly as early as 500 BC. Instead I ended the war and kept playing. Basically experimenting with stuff and working through the tech tree. I finally finished him off in 2100 with a series of nukes and modern armor stacks. ;)

Would my score/ranking have been better if I had just finished him off sooner? What are some of the ways to increase my score?

BTW, What an awesome cut scene at the end!!! :w00t:

The Power of Religion

I usually do not try to acquire any religion by being the first to research it. Later in the game, I find that some religion (say Buddhism) has spread to my city and by converting to it I will increase happiness.

a) If I convert to that religion, does this give the other country the power to see what is going on in my city?

b) I then build missionaries to spread Buddhism to my other cities because of the benefits of the Organised Religion civic. Does this expose every city of mine to the country which founded Buddhism?

c) Later I find that some other religion (say Judaism) has also spread to my city. Even if I build a missionary to spread Buddhism to that city and he succeeds, he does not kick out Judaism. Does this expose my city to the country that founded Judaism as well?

d) If I do not have an Open Borders agreement with any country, how can that country send a missionary into mine, to spread the religion, in the first place?

Where should I begin?

I'm a complete noob when it comes to this game. I have Civ4 Gold/ Warlords. Other than the occasional time victory on the lowest level, I'm pretty much hopeless.

I'm looking for specific recommendations on map size, settings, options, and victory conditions. My plan is to play through several of these scenarios to help isolate the areas that I'm having troubles with.

Too often when browsing forums like this I see specific information pertaining to levels/goals that I don't/can't play.

Hello im new to the forums!

Now i have bought the Civilization IV game and i have installed on my PC... i have even installed the Direct X 9.0c ... but when i try to run the game ... i can't because i receive an error about my graphics!

I know the recomeded system requirments! And i have them! But i can't play this game please help me!

It downloaded it when I tried to go on multiplayer then said please press ok to close and install patch.

Nothing happened, opened it up, it tried to download again.

Civ 4 and Windows Vista

I just recently got an HP laptop, nice specs, so I decided to install Civ Four, which didn't work on my crappy desktop because of horrible specs. I've got Vista, naturally. Anyway, I tried five or so times, but I had tons of troubles. I never got any pop-up screen telling me about installing the game, and when I tried to check the CD-ROM drive on the computer area to see if I could somehow install the game manually, everything froze up, and I had to remove the battery to actually get the computer to get back up (I know, horrible for the computer). So, the point is: Is Civ Four even compatible with Vista? If so, does anyone have any suggestions for how I can get the installation to work? And if it's not possible, is there some sort of patch that will allow Civ 4 to work with Vista? Thank you so much in advance for your help.

Patch problem

I got the 175 patch and after i did my game wont start it says it cant load the shaded library and it quits out i tried unistalling the game but it wont let me do that i went to the add and remove programs thing but still i cant it wont let me reinstal either i tried loading the original patch back but it says the newer one is there and i have to remove it before continuing what do i do

It's my first post here folks and I need help with installing Civ IV.

After I put the second CD and when it completes loading an error message comes up. I have even purchased the CIV IV Beyond the Sword! Please if anyone can help me with this I really appreciate.

I've Civilization IV, Gold Edition. The abridged manual indicates on the cover that the full manual can be found on disk 3. How do you access it? I've examined the contents of the CD and all I can find is a single CAB file.

Is there some other way to get to the manual? Is the manual missing?

The problem is as simple as I cant uninstal the game, Iv'e searched through the files of the game (CIV4), but theres no file like "uninstal game" or something likely!???

I can only find the options of reading the read-me files, connecting to the Civ4 website etc, but there totally nothing about on how to uninstal the game!?

Please help(this should be simple)

Well, I got to the big ... something ... jello mold ... whatever. Avoided it, in search of the pick-up point. Walked around the whole eastern edge of the map.

In game brightness adjustment

Does anyone else's game appear a little too dark?
How do I make the screen brighter?
I know you're supposed to be able to see areas you've been to before in a darkened manner, but I can't see them at all.
I have an HD 4850 and am running Catalyst CC 8.12, but no matter what I do on CCC Civ always reverts back to the dark level.
My monitor isn't adjustable to any higher either.

BtS - XML error

Hello,

I just bought Beyond the Sword (no other expansion packs) for Civilization 4 and it will not run. Installed 3.17 update and still no luck. It tells me:

XML Load Error

Load XML Call failed for Terrain/Civ4TerrainSettings.xml

Have tried changing my graphics settings to low and adjusting terrain settings to no avail. Also cleared the cache and updated Windows Vista. Game start and I can pick my setting but when it goes to start the game (create the Civ) I get the above error. Any advice?

So I got to 2050 and nothing happened. It was so anti-climactic. I was the obv. winner by domination and the U.N, but after my 2050 turn no screen came up saying I fished the game or anything and it didnt get recorded in the hall of fame. What is going on?

I know it shouldn't be required, but installing python is rumored to fix some of the crashing / xml problems... I'm going to test it out and see what happens, but I have been stable for a while... I seriously think it was the 900 items in my prefetch folder that caused my one crash to desktop / locked res...

I can play but when i tried to go online i made an account, fine, but the patch thing came up downoaded, fine also, but when it tried to install it said that it cannot detect a previous version installed or sumting but ofcourse i had. I must be completely stupid but.... i was a former user of civII and just installed civ IV.
Improvements of the game are great but i can't find out how to buy my production (i've got the good political "doctrine" - sorry it's the french word)...
It was a simple thing to do in civ II but there i can't see where i can do that.
