Where should I begin?

I'm a complete noob when it comes to this game. I have Civ4 Gold/ Warlords. Other than the occasional time victory on the lowest level, I'm pretty much hopeless.

I'm looking for specific recommendations on map size, settings, options, and victory conditions. My plan is to play through several of these scenarios to help isolate the areas that I'm having troubles with.

Too often when browsing forums like this I see specific information pertaining to levels/goals that I don't/can't play.

Problme With Civilization IV!

Hello im new to the forums!

Now i have bought the Civilization IV game and i have installed on my PC... i have even installed the Direct X 9.0c ... but when i try to run the game ... i can't because i receive an error about my graphics!

I know the recomeded system requirments! And i have them! But i can't play this game please help me!

How do you install a patch?
It downloaded it when I tried to go on multiplayer then said please press ok to close and install patch.

Nothing happened, opened it up, it tried to download again.
How do I install it?

Civ 4 and Windows Vista

I just recently got an HP laptop, nice specs, so I decided to install Civ Four, which didn't work on my crappy desktop because of horrible specs. I've got Vista, naturally. Anyway, I tried five or so times, but I had tons of troubles. I never got any pop-up screen telling me about installing the game, and when I tried to check the CD-ROM drive on the computer area to see if I could somehow install the game manually, everything froze up, and I had to remove the battery to actually get the computer to get back up (I know, horrible for the computer). So, the point is: Is Civ Four even compatible with Vista? If so, does anyone have any suggestions for how I can get the installation to work? And if it's not possible, is there some sort of patch that will allow Civ 4 to work with Vista? Thank you so much in advance for your help.

Patch problem

I got the 175 patch and after i did my game wont start it says it cant load the shaded library and it quits out i tried unistalling the game but it wont let me do that i went to the add and remove programs thing but still i cant it wont let me reinstal either i tried loading the original patch back but it says the newer one is there and i have to remove it before continuing what do i do

A question concerning PROMOTIONS

When you promote, say, a seige unit to barrage III, does it get the culminated bonus of +100% collateral damage or is it just 50% as the Barrage III description says? Thanks for the help, I am new. :D

It's my first post here folks and I need help with installing Civ IV.

After I put the second CD and when it completes loading an error message comes up. I have even purchased the CIV IV Beyond the Sword! Please if anyone can help me with this I really appreciate.

Game Manual

I've Civilization IV, Gold Edition. The abridged manual indicates on the cover that the full manual can be found on disk 3. How do you access it? I've examined the contents of the CD and all I can find is a single CAB file.

Is there some other way to get to the manual? Is the manual missing?

Could someone help me with this please?

The problem is as simple as I cant uninstal the game, Iv'e searched through the files of the game (CIV4), but theres no file like "uninstal game" or something likely!???

I can only find the options of reading the read-me files, connecting to the Civ4 website etc, but there totally nothing about on how to uninstal the game!?

Please help(this should be simple)

Well, I got to the big ... something ... jello mold ... whatever. Avoided it, in search of the pick-up point. Walked around the whole eastern edge of the map.

In game brightness adjustment

Does anyone else's game appear a little too dark?
How do I make the screen brighter?
I know you're supposed to be able to see areas you've been to before in a darkened manner, but I can't see them at all.
I have an HD 4850 and am running Catalyst CC 8.12, but no matter what I do on CCC Civ always reverts back to the dark level.
My monitor isn't adjustable to any higher either.

BtS - XML error

Hello,

I just bought Beyond the Sword (no other expansion packs) for Civilization 4 and it will not run. Installed 3.17 update and still no luck. It tells me:

XML Load Error

Load XML Call failed for Terrain/Civ4TerrainSettings.xml

Have tried changing my graphics settings to low and adjusting terrain settings to no avail. Also cleared the cache and updated Windows Vista. Game start and I can pick my setting but when it goes to start the game (create the Civ) I get the above error. Any advice?

So I got to 2050 and nothing happened. It was so anti-climactic. I was the obv. winner by domination and the U.N, but after my 2050 turn no screen came up saying I fished the game or anything and it didnt get recorded in the hall of fame. What is going on?

I know it shouldn't be required, but installing python is rumored to fix some of the crashing / xml problems... I'm going to test it out and see what happens, but I have been stable for a while... I seriously think it was the 900 items in my prefetch folder that caused my one crash to desktop / locked res...

Patch 1.61 "cannot find previous version"

I recently bought Cic IV not online and installed to "E:" drive not C: because its what i always do. I can play but when i tried to go online i made an account, fine, but the patch thing came up downoaded, fine also, but when it tried to install it said that it cannot detect a previous version installed or sumting but ofcourse i had. I must be completely stupid but.... i was a former user of civII and just installed civ IV.
Improvements of the game are great but i can't find out how to buy my production (i've got the good political "doctrine" - sorry it's the french word)...
It was a simple thing to do in civ II but there i can't see where i can do that.

City symbol colour meaning?

I have noticed that the symbol for my city, i.e. the Star for my capital and the circle for other ones, in front of my city name sometimes has different colours. It is usually white, but sometimes it is green or pink. Does anybody know what this means?

controlling workers

so I can pretty much dominate on warlord and I’m about to jump up to noble… so I’m thinking, as far as strategy goes, should I quit with the automating of my workers or will it not matter at noble either? what about for higher difficulty? should I just start doing them manually now so that I can get used to it again?

also if you can point me to a place on here where I can get a good idea about what techs to develop and which ones to skip in the early stages of the game…

Warlords Install Error

After doing some Googling I read some posts of other gamers who were having the same problem as I was. They where able to get around this by installing their games while in safe mode, so I tried it myself and it worked. And what I don't understand is why didn't have this problem a few weeks ago when I first install it and what was causing the problem in the first place?

Is there a way to specify how the game creates specialists?

I love this game, but it seems as my cities mature & excess citizens are turned into specialists the game almost always turns them into priests when I would prefer artists and/or engineers. While I know you can set a city to emphasize food, production or great people, etc.; is there a way to set-up a specific order of specialists? I prefer to play a cultural dominate game and therefore would like my specialists to fill the artists first, followed by engineers, scientists, merchants with priests last.

Question from a newbie.

On a square, I currently have a town. Yet, the computer keeps putting a blue circle on this square saying it needs improving again.

The assumption I made was that at this point in my game, my civ would benefit better from a farm than a village or town. Or maybe I should add a road. My gold reserves are very high so I could replace the town with a farm.

Are these correct assumptions?

Conques wont start

I have bean playing Civ 3 conquests for a little while, but then I wanted to try multy player, but that wouldnt work because my V1.0 game was incompatable to the host.

So i installed to latest patch from the official Civilization site.

So I get ready to play a game, but I get an error messege telling me that the disk cannot be found or read or something like that.

What should I do?

Custom game screen problem...help!

Whenever I set up a custom game, if I choose to have only two AI's and set the others at "closed", they all start showing up as if I didn't even use the custom screen.

I'm new at civ IV, but have played III many times.

I'm playing at difficulty "settler", continents, standard map and normal speed.

I have tried 5 different times and the problem always occurs. I have the civ IV Gold edition.

Any suggestions?

Accessing the Game Manual

I just bought CivIV, and the manual says the full instructions can be found on disc 3.

I put in disc 3, but can't seem to access the manual. Nothing auto-starts, and when I explore the CD, there's a file named "data4". If I try to explore it, it just shows as empty. If I double-click on it, it asks what program I want to open it with, but I can't find any program that will read it. It seems to me that it isn't even the right file, as disc 2 has "data3" on it, so I'm assuming these are just for installation purposes and not the manual that I'm looking for.

I also looked on discs 1 and 2, but I don't see any game manual.

After about five years of installing and uninstalling various applications and files on my rig, I finally found myself unable to correct some issues and reformatted my Win XP Home OS today.

Now my Sounds and Audio Devices control Panel has

"No Audio Device" under the Volume tab?

It is an MSI motherboard without any special sound card, so maybe the drivers are from the MSI installation CD, and those got uninstalled in the reformatting??
