The earliest space race victory sounds like a nice challenge for us. This will make a tech pimp like Zigeuner really happy.:P

RE: November 2007 BTS Game of the Month

I'd really like to see a GOTM with a Space Race as the only victory condition turned on. If you look through the past winners, it seems extremely rare to have someone win a GOTM with a Space Race.

In fact... I haven't won one yet on BTS. :P I usually want to kick someone's butt early and get a huge score.

My 2 cents. I've given it before, so this is at least 4 or 6 cents, maybe. :D

RE: November 2007 BTS Game of the Month

Yea, it would be nice to have a GOTM X-mas edition this month.

RE: November 2007 BTS Game of the Month

It will be up late tonight or early in the morning. Last month I had the same problem. It was clear that one civ was going for a cultural victory. Just send some ships with about 30 units up there and get rid of those towns. It worked like a dream.

Edit:
This was a weird little city. Built in a less-than-optimal spot to keep the Zulus out, and starting more as a unit pump than anything else, it became the holy city for 2 religions. Why did you not build Maoi Statue here? That's what I did and regarding production it was competing with my capitol at some stage.

You did probably use more culture bombs (I used 2) compared to my game. And you were clever enough to irrigate all the lands. I did build some cottages which was a mistake.
I built MS in the former Zulu capital where I produced most my ships; it had a military instructor when I took it over (as if that explains it ;)).

Towards the very end I generated five or six great artists. I didn't build any cottages except where I couldn't irrigate. For a long time, all I wanted was all the wonders; everything else was unimportant. I had quite a few neglected cities, because I didn't want them to lose focus (one built missionaries, one built spies, two built land units, and so on). My cash cow didn't even have time to get wall street. :)
Zig, how the bloody hell did you manage to build so many wonders in Nidaros with such low initial production? Boggles the mind how you get all those at such a high level. I've not tried this one yet, I'm a little wary of the difficulty level. I might give it a shot, dunno.

I really do prefer Warlords GotM, but since that's been deemed obsolete on this board, I don't bother getting involved with GotM much here anymore. [Sad]
First of all, there's marble and stone closeby, and you start out as industrious. Second, low production? Look at all those hills! I kept it small for a long time (not enough food) but I was still working the cows (3), 2 gold (6), and one grass hill (3), which is very decent. Then I settled all the early great prophets which give +2 hammers each, and I was generating a lot of them. An early engineer (+3) helped, and even the scientists from the great library (+1 each). I got the idea from outrageous threads like this one by obsolete (all his threads have "walkthrough" in the title). He did some on emperor too.

BtS is still pretty much the same. You don't have to focus on espionage or corporations. And mongoose is kind to us; we get our own little continent to conquer, and this time so did everyone else. TWO gold mines in the fat cross warrants an entire step up on the difficulty scale. It's truly an enormous benefit. Give it a twirl, you'll be amazed.
Zigeuner, do you have any idea of how ludicrously big those cities are? It seems like I need to get the Sushi Corporation in all of my future games. Thus far I've only used Mining Inc, which r0x0r, but with sushi too I'll soon be winning on Immortal [w00t]
Sushi is ludicrous, and with a little direction you can get to it very early.

As for higher difficulties, this little exercise might give you something to ponder...

RE: November 2007 BTS Game of the Month

Zigeuner, do you have any idea of how ludicrously big those cities are? I raced for biology, then sushi, dropped research to 0% and hired many many artists. I also built a lot of ships and other units, to at least be able to protect my cultural threesome. Didn't drop behind in science though, so at the end my infantry were the best unit anyone could field. I think it was mainly the two gold mines that did the trick. Anyway, some screenshots...

The list of wonders in this city goes on a bit. I was generating (and settling, as you can see) a lot of great people here. Sid's Sushi is powerful! You can get an insane number of specialists and combined with representation this is a winner. I was able to research fascism in 4 turns at 0% science.:P

For the first time I saw the AI stealing techies; nice. Another trick I used; I made a small 'cannon fodder stack' to get rid of my enemies artillery. My large stack came in after that and because the AI used all their artillery on my first small stack I could run over them with my sod.

I still made some mistakes. Still, being able to swim up next to all these coastal cities and pillage away was beautiful.

Still took me way too long to finish off. At the start, I decided to move my settler east 1 square and settle on top of the plains/hill/gold square. This gave my city tile +1 hammer and it produced +3 gold instead of +1. This little boost in reasearch allowed me to quickly found two religions (hinduism and judism). I also built Stonehedge, the Oracle (to found christianity), and Pyramids. In between wonders I found 2 cities, one to gain access of the horse and another on the eastern shore of the island. Before building hte Pyramids, I quickly built a few chariots and rushed the Zulu.

I had read here that their impi could be a huge problem, so I decided to take my chances and rush them, hopin they had yet to connect their copper. Luckily, they didn't even have bronze working! I quickly took their second city, which had 1 warrior (and razed it - the civilians rushed to their capital to produce a couple arches). I send pillaged the land arround the capital and left units on each of the squares, forcing the city to only work ocean squares. After a couple turns of slowly weakining their few archers, the city was mine and the Zulu was gone while it was still B.C.

Since I now had control of my island/continent with no nearby rival, and I had already found 3 religions and built a few wonders, I decided to go the cultural root. I started building wonders galore; the stone and marble resources were key to this strategy. I also was first to circumnavigate the globe and was way ahead in tech than the rest of the world. My tech bar was never below 80% and after the Zulu were destroyed it was at 90% and 10% espionage or culture (until later in the game, when it was pure culture). I was great friends with everyone.

The russian empire fell to whatever the other civ on the north east island was and gliamesh fell to whatever the other civ on the north west island was. I was trading techs like mad, giving into demands here and there, and the world loved me. I was first in everything, except millitary and three of my cities were approaching legendary culture.

My capitol reached it first and the other two were like 20 turns away. Then, something terrible happend! My good friends, the (I forget which ones - i hate this unrestricted leaders thing, i always forget whos who..... - my good friends were the ones who were sharing the south east island with the english) betrayed me! They sneak attacked me, landing troops on my island by the billions! I was done......my little army didn't stand a chance....and that was the end of me..... :hehe:

Wow - that was long - hopefully its not to confusing lol. :hehe:

RE: November 2007 BTS Game of the Month
The war against the Zulu's is still not entirely finished for me. I waited until I had pikes to take on the elephants, but in the meantime the buggers got longbows and maces, so I could only take 2 cities at first. The second war took care of their capital. Now there's just an island city left.

I was afraid that this would be a replica of last month's game, where everyone knew everyone, but luckily (...) that's not the case. There's just one civ kind of in the same era, the others are considerably behind. I think privateers will go a long way.

I may try to win this one culturally; never done that before. I have a great merchant waiting to found Sushi, so I can install many great artists to celebrate our great capital, and the wonderful realm of the vikings. The great lighthouse was captured, so the only wonder missing is the game-making Pyramids. Doesn't matter now, since I'm using representation. I'm yielding so many great people, I'm burning them up for 12-turn golden ages, which yield so many great people, it's just great. :D
RE: November 2007 BTS Game of the Month

Louis is a funny dude!:P
I captured the 2 cities on our continent and noticed he had a city on an island. I could not take him out in one sweep. Some turns later I granted him open borders to check the island city. He sailed a settler and an archer all the way to the south east to establish a new city at the pig:P. Now I need to wait for my beserkers to take him out. I sailed around the world and I found 2 more civs. One of them has a pop 16 city! wow. :w00t:. I got the 2 worst events for my capitol. I lost 2 population and now my 2nd, 3rd and fourth city are even larger than my capitol. I will now try to find the other civs and prepare for the third war against Louis. I need to take him out before astronomy.
RE: November 2007 BTS Game of the Month
I've been trying my hand at the specialist economy, and thought this start (and the industrious trait) perfect for the wonder variety. (means: great capital, mostly lame support cities, and boy, are they mostly lame!) I managed to close the net on the dastard Zulus with two fort cities on hills. They kept begging for open borders, but alas, it just wasn't in the air. I used the fort cities to build defensive units while my cap picked up wonders. So far, I missed only the great lighthouse and... the pyramids. :P (The Pyramids should be THE core wonder for a specialist economy, worth the great wall, stonehenge and oracle combined. I just about fell off my chair laughing when someone completed it before me.)

I stuck to my strategy though, and have generated a TON of great people already. Research is a breeze with those gold mines pulling the wagon, so it's (well?) before 1000AD and I have enough Berserkers to take the Zulus down (hopefully) tonight. Capital is still building wonders like crazy. All those great priests add 2 hammers and 5 gold so with stone and marble hooked up ALL wonders take around 8 turns. Research hasn't dropped below 80% so far.

This may not be the best strategy, but if you want some old-fashioned civ2 style wonder spamming, it is certainly viable. If you're interested, look for "walkthrough" threads by obsolete on CFC. The only things I'm doing different from him is start religions and build small (lame!) support cities. I'm growing rather fond of such small, strategically located towns that sit on a plains hill and work two grassland hills (or equivalent). Build barracks and archers, chariots, axes until you can finally grow it to a decent size (around 8 :P).

Anyway, this is bound to be a quick game, even though I probably won't conquer the world. Fun, fun, fun! ;)
Addited: I haven't built any cottages yet, and I think I'll be destroying the ones I'm going to take over shortly. They are sooo overrated anyway... :w00t:
